PREPARING FOR THE STORM

By Angeline M Duran Santiago

I don't know if there's such a thing as preparing for the storm. Most likely, we don't usually know when the storm is getting ready to come upon us. We await it based on predictions, feelings, and experience with nature over time. So it is with life. Our experience with life somehow, in a small way, creates in us the ability to many times feel the storm coming, but still, it doesn't mean we are ready to face it, again.

We all want to be ready for disaster. We want to be ready for the moment of lack, to have more than enough to supply our family's needs, and to be secure not only financially but in every aspect possible. We want our home to be a shelter from the waves that buffet us left and right, leaving us soaked, naked, and afraid. We want our faith to be the anchor that holds us when giant waves rise, stealing our next breath and leaving us for dead at the bottom of the sea.

Life seems to have a way of creating havoc around us and the truth is we don't need to go far away into an adventure to find ourselves, mentally preparing for the storm. The storm comes in the form of sickness.  It comes in the wave of the times we are living and the changes taking place around us, disarming our security and unleashing fear. The storm comes as we struggle to push our children forward but something holds them back and all we can do is pray. Storms come in the shape of bad news, less pay, job loss, greater bills, family crisis, and all hell breaking lose around us, because you know what, it just really is.

Prepare for the storm. Take hold of His Word. You have it somewhere. Open it. Read it. Absorb it. Live it. Make it a reality in your life. Make it part of your life. Let those words become part of your very reason to keep going.

Prepare for the storm. Seek the Author of the Words of Life. Surrender your heart to the One who can save it. Place your security in the hands of the One who walks on water, speaks to the storms, and defeated death once and for all.

Prepare for the storm. Take hold of God's word because in the end it is the source of peace. Tattoo it in your heart. Engrave it in your soul. Wrap it around your spirit. Keep it before your eyes and let your thoughts be filled with echoes of the secrets hidden within the pages that speak of the Ancient of Days. Prepare for the storm by hiding under the shadow of the Almighty, the One who looks into our hearts, during the rising storm and says, "Fear Not!"
